The book describes the significance of food and feasts as told in Scripture and in the lives of the saints; food and dining in Greek and Roman mythology and in later literature and history; and how artists through the ages have created allegories of gluttony and odes to the sense of taste, using, for example, artfully positioned fruits and vegetables in the golden age of the still-life genre in painting. Also discussed is the role of table settings in relation to such ceremonies as formal dinners and royal banquets. Lastly, a close-up look at the symbolic meanings of individual foods and drinks - from the artichoke, also known as "domestic thistle," to Champagne, from chilli peppers to absinthe - reveals a figurative language well known to artists of the time but perhaps forgotten by contemporary diners.

Het middeleeuwse openbare badhuis wordt sinds de negentiende eeuw voorgesteld als bordeel, als schouwtoneel van vermeende middeleeuwse losbandigheid en seksualiteit. Fabiola van Dam laat zien dat het om een veelzijdiger fenomeen gaat. Het badhuis was een stedelijke basisvoorziening die individuele mensen in staat stelde om lichamelijk en mentaal gezond te leven. Het bevorderde ook de openbare gezondheid. Dat middeleeuwers dit erg belangrijk vonden, blijkt uit de talloze badvoorschriften in medische literatuur en populaire gezondheidsleren, de regels met betrekking tot de openbare hygiëne en de vele afbeeldingen van badscènes. Onderzoek naar de badvoorzieningen, de ideeën erachter en de spelregels eromheen onthullen wat in de middeleeuwse cultuur werd beschouwd als vuil en schoon, ziek en gezond. Ook in spiritueel opzicht. Het badhuis is daarvan niet alleen fenomeen, maar is daarvoor ook een metafoor en een schouwtoneel.

There are a huge number of works of art which represent Biblical scenes, and even though only a handful of such pictorial representations show meals or cookery, it is an intriguing visual topic. This splendidly illustrated book deals with about twenty episodes which are relatively frequently chose as subjects by painters, The emphasis is on the social aspects of eating and discusses both the figures in such scenes, their postures and gestures, and the moral lessons of the text. The actual food is relatively sparsely shown but is nonetheless culturally interesting. The text provides both a detailed commentary on the images themselves and the broader context from which they derive.
